Background of the study
University research is a critical driver of innovation and academic excellence; however, the management and storage of research data remain a significant challenge. In Sokoto North LGA, Sokoto State, traditional data storage solutions are often inadequate in handling large volumes of diverse and sensitive research data. IoT‑based smart cloud storage systems offer a transformative solution by providing scalable, secure, and real‑time data storage capabilities (Adamu, 2023). These systems integrate advanced cloud computing with IoT devices to ensure that research data is automatically backed up, monitored, and readily accessible to authorized users (Ibrahim, 2024).
The implementation of smart cloud storage can revolutionize data management in universities by enhancing data integrity, reducing manual errors, and facilitating seamless collaboration among researchers. Real‑time data synchronization and automated backup features ensure that valuable research data is protected from loss and corruption. Furthermore, the integration of advanced security protocols, such as encryption and multi‑factor authentication, helps safeguard sensitive information against cyber threats (Olayinka, 2023). This not only builds trust among researchers but also promotes compliance with international data protection standards.
Despite these advantages, several challenges must be addressed to realize the full potential of IoT‑based smart cloud storage in academic settings. Issues such as high implementation costs, network reliability, and the need for continuous technical support are significant barriers. Additionally, the interoperability between existing university systems and new cloud‑based solutions remains a critical concern (Adamu, 2023). Moreover, ensuring user training and addressing data privacy concerns are essential for widespread adoption.
This study aims to investigate the feasibility and benefits of implementing IoT‑based smart cloud storage systems for university research data in Sokoto North LGA. By examining technical, operational, and economic factors, the research seeks to propose a strategic framework that optimizes data management, enhances research collaboration, and ensures the security and accessibility of valuable academic resources (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Universities in Sokoto North LGA are confronted with the challenge of managing an ever‑increasing volume of research data using outdated storage systems. These conventional methods are often insufficient in ensuring data integrity, accessibility, and security. Manual data management processes lead to errors, data loss, and difficulties in retrieving information, thereby hindering research progress and collaboration (Olayinka, 2023). Furthermore, the absence of automated backup and real‑time monitoring exposes research data to potential cyber threats and hardware failures.
The integration of IoT‑based smart cloud storage systems promises to resolve these issues by offering scalable and secure data management solutions. However, several barriers impede their effective adoption in university environments. High implementation costs, inadequate digital infrastructure, and the need for specialized technical skills are significant challenges. In addition, concerns regarding data privacy and the interoperability of legacy systems with modern cloud platforms further complicate the transition to smart cloud storage (Adamu, 2023). The lack of a standardized framework for integrating IoT devices with cloud systems also contributes to operational inefficiencies and security vulnerabilities.
This study aims to address these issues by evaluating the current data storage practices and exploring the potential of IoT‑based smart cloud storage solutions. By analyzing the technical requirements, financial implications, and operational challenges, the research seeks to develop a comprehensive framework that ensures secure, efficient, and accessible storage of university research data. Ultimately, this study will provide recommendations for enhancing data management practices, thereby supporting academic excellence and research innovation in Sokoto North LGA (Ibrahim, 2024).
